Hal Standish I became involved in spaniels about thirty years ago, when I met my wife, Nancy. While she was into showing the English Springer Spaniel, I discovered the "other side" of the breed. Before long, we owned our first field bred springer. As with any hobby you become passionate about, we soon owned several field bred spaniels. Then came the challenge of how to train them. With no other folks in our area with this same breed, I soon began driving to Ohio and to Wisconsin to learn how to train.
As time went on, we bred a few litters, sold a few pups and developed a small "club" of spaniel enthusiasts. We began to train on a regular basis and from that formed the Great Lakes English Springer Spaniel Field Training Association.
In 1989 we imported an little lady dog, Justamuc's Huntsman's Cry, fondly known as Talley. She taught us the most. We sent her to a "pro" and she got us hooked.
We had an opportunity to purchase a young male approx 18 months old. We'd helped a young man buy this dog as a pup, but he now could not keep the dog any longer. We brought Alex home with no training or bird sense. After his short visit with a professional trainer, it became clear that we would have to learn how to run this dog. I worked weekends, so it was up to Nancy to take control of the reins. She did, and in just two years, FC/AFC Sgt. Alexander Brutus earned both field champion titles. From that time forward to now, we have owned many wonderful trial dogs and gun dogs. Many of our dogs go directly back to "Alex".
My passion continues to grow.
I also manage a hunting preserve and have a group of dogs that I use for guided hunts, and European shoots.
